Internship Opportunities

The ACLU is a non-profit public interest legal organization. We handle cases involving violation of the rights guaranteed in the Constitution. We have litigated cases to protect freedom of speech, freedom of the press, privacy (including reproductive freedom), impartial juries, the right to protest and freedom of association. As the oldest civil liberties organization in the country, the ACLU has been involved in more than 80 percent of precedent setting litigation before the Supreme Court.

Interns are responsible for several significant activities of the Georgia ACLU. Because we have a very small staff and receive about twenty requests for assistance each day, the help of our interns and volunteers are necessary for reviewing and responding to these requests. Many times our limited resources will not allow us to litigate cases that do, indeed, have merit. In these instances, Interns draft special letters on behalf of the individual attempting to resolve the situation.

Interns also assist staff with the cases that the ACLU does accept. They assist in interviewing potential clients, arrange press releases, file documents with courts, and occasionally help the executive director in lobbying efforts, or other miscellaneous tasks. In addition, interns will assist with day to day office tasks of photocopying, answering the phones and bulk mailing.

An opportunity also exists to assist with and learn fundraising, grant writing, grant research, and publication skills while working with our Development person.

The ACLU of Georgia would like its interns to have good writing skills, be able to screen letters for specific issues, work with minimal or no supervision, and have at least some knowledge of computers (especially word processing). Students willing to undertake a wide variety of tasks are always welcomed.

Internships are unpaid and available year round (minimum 10-15 hours weekly).

We welcome your participation and support. It is because of the members, interns, and volunteers that the ACLU is able to provide its vital role in defending civil liberties and protecting the Bill of Rights. There is a special membership category for students and those with a limited income.

Our office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you or your group would like to request a speaker from the ACLU, please contact our office and we will do all we can to provide one. Please feel free to call us if you ever have any questions or comments about the ACLU of Georgia.

Thank you, again, for your interest. We hope to hear from you soon. Please give us a call at 404.523.6201 if you have any additional questions or concerns.
