"Unless adequate protective devices are employed to dispel the compulsion inherent in custodial surroundings, no statement obtained from the defendant can truly be the product of his free choice."

- Cheif Justice Earl Warren, delivering the marjority opinion in Miranda v. Arizona (1966)

Every day, police officers are tasked with enforcing the laws of their community and protecting the public safety. This is a difficult and sometimes dangerous job that deserves much recognition and thanks.

As the saying goes though, with much power comes much responsiblity. For police officers, their power to enforce laws is enjoined with their responsibility to do so in a way that does not violate the rights of individuals. The ACLU works to ensure that the police carry out their jobs in an ethical way, and that if any police officers do abuse their power, that they are held accountable.
