ACLU Day of Action Against Racial Discrimination

Georgia Human Rights Day – December 10, 2007

Dear ACLU Supporters:

Please join the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia on Monday, December 10, 2007 in honor of International Human Rights Day. In collaboration with the Honorable State Senator Vincent Fort (D-39), we will present a Georgia General Assembly resolution, proclaiming December 10th as Georgia Human Rights Day.

The ACLU of Georgia will launch a shadow report on United States non-compliance with the United Nations Convention to End all Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), on Monday, December 10th at First Iconium Baptist Church, located at 542 Moreland Avenue, SE Atlanta, Georgia 30316; located just south of the 20 Freeway, on Moreland Avenue.

We will be convening a press conference at First Iconium Baptist Church at 11:30am.

Press conference participants are as follows: Alvin Bronstein (National ACLU), Debbie Seagraves/Benetta Standly (ACLU of Georgia), State Senator Vincent Fort, Laura Moye (Amnesty International), Tony Graves (First Iconium Baptist Church, Social Justice Ministry), and Helen Butler (Coalition for the People’s Agenda). In addition, a young child will recite excerpts from CERD.

Our coalition partners include: First Iconium Baptist Church – Social Justice Ministry, US Human Rights Network, Georgia Latino Alliance For Human Rights, Amnesty International, Georgia NAACP, Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta, MLK March Committee, Coalition for the People’s Agenda, Open Door Society, The People’s Institute for Survival & Beyond, Task Force for the Homeless, African-American Human Rights Foundation, Jobs With Justice, and Project South.

We will also be introducing research findings on Best Practices For Dismantling the School To Prison Pipeline, the published report will be available for distribution.

Additionally, the ACLU of Georgia will convene a town hall meeting to continue the dialogue on racial injustice as a human rights violation. The dialogue will center on the impact of 1994’s Senate Bill 440 which became the Georgia law that allows children to be tried as adults; the proposed revision of the Georgia juvenile justice code, over discipline in public schools; with perspectives from juvenile justice attorneys and activists who monitor prisons and jails. The town hall meeting will take place at First Iconium Baptist Church at 6:00pm; hosted by their Social Justice Ministry.

Participants in the town hall meeting will include: State Senator Vincent Fort, Homero Leon (Georgia Legal Services), and Benetta M. Standly (Moderator). I am currently recruiting a young person to serve on the panel.
