The ACLU of Georgia enhances and defends the civil liberties and rights of all Georgians through legal action, legislative and community advocacy, and civic education and engagement. In the aftermath of the 2020 November election cycle and the upcoming 2021 Georgia State Legislative Session, the civil rights and liberties of Georgia remain at stake.
Some of our anticipated legislative work will include the following.
Fighting for Redistricting Reform
Topline priority: Creating transparency and public accessibility in the redistricting process. Our focus will be on making the redistricting process as publicly accessible and transparent as possible through community education efforts and legislative advocacy.
Protecting Voter Rights
Topline priority: Protecting voter access. Following the results of the November 3rd 2020 election, it is expected that there will be attacks on voter access. Our main focus during the legislative session will be defending access to the ballot.
Fighting for Reproductive Rights & Women’s Rights
Topline priority: Advancing protections and services for pregnant women in Georgia through expanding postpartum Medicaid coverage to one year. Our legislative work will also including fight additional protections for pregnant people within the criminal legal system.
Fighting for Criminal Legal System Reform
Topline priority: Accountability work surrounding the newly elected sheriffs and district attorneys in the metro-Atlanta and Athens areas. In the state legislature, we will continue to advance cannabis reform.
