This week on The Local Take I speak with Andrea Young, Executive Director of the ACLU of Georgia. The American Civil Liberties Union has launched a Smart Justice campaign to End Mass Incarceration. Andrea Young explains that one way to do so is by voting.

Ms. Young shares that Georgia is #4 in the number of citizens incarcerated in the country and #1 with the number of citizens involved in the criminal justice system (parole, probation). Our state is spending $1Billion a year to house prisoners.

She also speaks about the cash bail system in our country and shares how and why it should end. Currently, our prisons are being used to address homelessness and mental health challenges.

The ACLU will celebrate 100 years of advocacy in 2019. They have worked in Georgia for the last 60 years focused on voting rights.
