ATLANTA – The Associated Press called key races in our state: Keisha Lance Bottoms as winner for Georgia Governor and Jon Ossoff for U.S. Senate. In addition, a number of pro-civil liberties candidates were elected to Georgia’s state legislature.
These candidates set to take office have committed to the protection of every Georgian’s civil rights and liberties.
“Last night’s results show Georgians will use the right to vote to defend their civil rights and reject attempts to erode them. By electing pro-democracy candidates to the Georgia House, voters helped block attacks on reproductive freedom, voting rights, and other fundamental liberties,” said Christopher Bruce, deputy executive director of the ACLU of Georgia. “The ACLU of Georgia will continue working to ensure our lawmakers respect the rights of every Georgian and that our communities have the freedom and opportunity to shape their own futures.”
This comes after the ACLU of Georgia and the ACLU Voter Education Fund launched a $250,000 campaign to educate Georgia voters ahead of the election and inform them of the civil rights and liberties that were on their ballots, including voting rights and reproductive freedom. To inform voters on where the candidates stood on key issue areas that would affect their lives over the next two years, the campaign distributed mail featuring their responses to questions on those issues, such as whether they would vote to repeal Georgia’s six-week abortion ban, in State House Districts 48, 53, and 105.
