ATLANTA—The ACLU of Georgia has been consistently opposed to Georgia’s domestic terrorism law, which carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 35 years. The May 31 arrests fulfill our greatest fears; they show the law being used to not only label opposition to governmental policy as domestic terrorism, but in this situation, to justify sending a SWAT team to raid the home of people working for an organization that provides bail and representation to those arrested while protesting the building of an Atlanta police training center. These arrests should alarm everyone who believes that free speech and the right to protest are fundamental to our democracy.
