Civil Rights Group is Working to Provide Information to Voters in Cobb and Gwinnett Counties About the Stakes of the Upcoming Sheriff Election in Both Counties.

ATLANTA - The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia announced their involvement in voter education and mobilization programs across metro-Atlanta, including the pivotal sheriff races in Cobb and Gwinnett County.

The ACLU of Georgia does not support, oppose, or endorse candidates for elected office, however, the organization is committed to ensuring voters are able to make an informed decision by educating them on key civil liberties issues at stake in these elections. The ACLU of Georgia released scorecards highlighting the candidates’ positions on criminal justice reform and immigrants’ rights.

“The civil rights and liberties of Georgians are at stake in these elections. The ACLU has a duty to fight for the rights of all people, including those that are currently held in jails,” said Christopher Bruce, Political Director for the ACLU of Georgia. “The next sheriff will have a huge impact on the local jail conditions and on families being split up by dangerous anti-immigrant policies. That’s why we are educating and mobilizing voters in these key elections.”

The ACLU of Georgia has been working with coalition partners on the ground to pressure the county district attorney and other agencies to investigate the more than 49 deaths that have occurred under the tenure of the current Cobb County sheriff. In Gwinnett County, the ACLU of Georgia wants to see an end to the anti-immigration policies and 287g program that has resulted in Gwinnett County becoming one of the largest counties for deportations through the sheriff’s office. The ACLU is investing $500,000 in Georgia and will reach 300,000 voters in Cobb and Gwinnett Counties through a robust campaign of digital ads, mail, phone banking, texts, email, and social media to share the candidates’ positions on these important issues.

The ACLU is a nonpartisan organization that does not endorse or oppose any candidate for office. The ACLU’s goal is to promote voter education and voter participation.
