Georgia law requires parents to obtain explicit permission from a local school board before enrolling their child in a “released time” course for religious or moral instruction. HB 133 eliminates that oversight, giving parents nearly complete discretion to place their children in unvetted religious education programs during the public school day. It also allows students to receive academic credit for these courses.

The ACLU of Georgia opposes HB 133 because it disrupts public education, jeopardizes student safety, and grants unconstitutional preference to religious instruction over secular alternatives.
