The ACLU of Georgia Victorious in Protecting Georgians’ First Amendment Rights in Federal Lawsuit Against the City of Savannah

Savannah – This morning, the ACLU of Georgia along with the Claiborne Firm, P.C. and Woolf Law Firm filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Savannah seeking emergency injunctive relief to prevent the city from enforcing an unconstitutional ban on displaying hand-held poster signs in view of Vice President Mike Pence along the St. Patrick's Day Parade route. Once the lawsuit was filed, the city of Savannah reversed its unconstitutional policy.

“It is unfortunate that Savannah was apparently more interested in protecting the Vice President’s feelings than the First Amendment rights of its own citizens,” stated Sean J. Young, Legal Director of the ACLU of Georgia. “Instead of waiting for the ACLU of Georgia to file a lawsuit to protect the sacred, constitutional rights of its citizens, the city should have done the right thing to being with.”
