Georgia voters are out in force for the 2026 midterms. By the end of last week some 1.5 million had voted.

Across the state, hundreds of volunteers are making sure people can exercise their constitutional right. The ACLU of Georgia has recruited about 700 poll observers to cover 54 counties, with many of them already trained and out in the field.

Their work is part of a statewide Election Protection network that monitors voting, identifies barriers, and connects voters with resources when problems arise. Sometimes, as observers discover during early voting, protecting the right to vote simply means watching as everything runs smoothly.

Seeing Democracy in Action

On Friday, October 23, at Roswell Public Library, poll observers Jeff Hopkins and Judy Fielder watched a steady stream of voters come through the doors. Both described an orderly process, short waits, and no significant issues.

“The turnout looks pretty healthy,” said Hopkins. Across his four days observing, he saw voters arriving consistently, whether alone, with family members, or with children. One voter brought a dog.

Hopkins said the longest wait time he noted was about eight minutes. Most voters were in and out within five minutes. Compared with previous elections, when he witnessed much longer lines, the experience was a welcome surprise.

“I love it,” Hopkins said of the turnout. “That’s one of the reasons I do this, to hopefully see a lot of people exercise their right to vote.”

Fielder’s takeaways during early voting at the library in northern Fulton County mirrored her volunteering partner’s. She said some of the most memorable moments were watching parents bring their children to the polls, including those voting for the first time.

“I’m really pleased to see that so many people are voting,” she said. “It’s been really wonderful to be a part of.”

Why Observers Matter, Even When Nothing Goes Wrong

Poll observers help us and our partners identify and respond to problems like voter intimidation, inaccessible polling places, and other voting rights violations. They monitor election administration during early voting, on Election Day, and through tabulation and certification of results.

Fielder said she felt prepared for the work. The ACLU of Georgia’s training and follow-up communications helped her understand her responsibilities, recognize potential problems, and know who to contact if an issue arose.

“I feel really well supported through all of it,” she said.

That preparation is vital. Observers are not there to interfere with election workers or direct voters. They watch, document concerns, and help ensure eligible voters can participate without unlawful barriers or intimidation.

This large pool of willing volunteers reflects a growing commitment to election protection. With hundreds signed up statewide, we’re building a network ready to respond when voters need support.

It’s about paying attention, being vigilant, and helping every eligible voter have a fair opportunity to cast a ballot.

As the early voting numbers show, Georgians are making their voices heard.
