ATLANTA – Policy & Advocacy Director Christopher Bruce will provide remarks at the Fulton County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, regarding the ACLU of Georgia’s position on a proposal to convert the county’s elected position of magistrate judge into an appointed role.

The ACLU of Georgia strongly opposes the change. Shifting the position from appointed to elected risks undermining the principles of transparency, accountability, and community representation.

“The cornerstone of our democratic system is the direct election of public officials, ensuring that they are accountable to the people they serve. The office of Magistrate Judge is no exception, and the ability of citizens to elect individuals to this position is fundamental to maintaining a fair and just legal system,” Bruce said.
